Bandicoot Run 2022 Syrah
Notes from team Bandicoot:
Half the fruit for this wine came from the oldest vines on the farm, that Al’s dad planted in the early 2000’s. Typically this fruit offers more of the savoury spectrum, being quite earthy and spice driven, with lots of concentration. The other half of the fruit came off our block of Syrah planted in 2017 and contributes more of a fresh-fruited profile and some youthful energy. Being the last grapes that we picked for the season, we had the luxury of a little extra time, so these grapes were hand-destemmed and co-fermented with 5% Viognier (we have just 3 rows, which were planted for this sole purpose) resulting in a beautiful floral note that binds the different elements of the wine together and makes it whole. This method allows the berries to be gently removed from the stem, resulting is near zero juice and a lovely carbonic lift in the finished wine. After two weeks, we basket-pressed the ferment, and it spent the rest of the year in one older oak barrel and a small tank. A small amount of So2 added prior to bottling.
